South Australian Farmers Federation (SAFF)

Who Are We?

The South Australian Farmers Federation is the State's principal farmer organisation with a proud history of representation and support for farmers dating back more than 100 years. We represent industries which have helped to build South Australia , and will continue to play a key role in its future.

We have a dedicated team of people who work in partnership with government departments, statutory authorities, politicians, businesses, the media and, most importantly, our members to assist in the development of the rural sector. This team consists of specialists with extensive knowledge in areas as diverse as industrial relations, natural resource management, communication/public relations, education and training, farm profitability, finance, debt mediation and trade.

The Federation has resources dedicated to:

  • providing timely and certain processes for addressing Aboriginal heritage issues for land holders;
  • providing information on Native Title to land holders and the community and;
  • seeking adequate representation for land holders affected by Native Title claims and equity and security of tenure for agricultural pursuits.

Why Negotiate?

The Federation believes that reconciliation is a two-way street, with significant mutual benefits. With goodwill and mutual respect from all parties, we can lessen the differences within local communities, and with co-operation, we can work for a more equitable future for all rural and remote Australians. The South Australian Farmers Federation is prepared to play its part in the process and seeks the ongoing support of Aboriginal organisations in our joint endeavours.

The Federation sees participating in the SA Native Title Resolution Negotiations as one important part of helping South Australian farmers achieve sustainable profitability by providing representation, leadership and services to members, and fostering a unified voice to promote farming interests.

Agriculture and horticulture contribute more than $4.0 billion annually to Gross State Production (GSP) and account for around 55% of the State's export revenue. The Centre for International Economics has forecast that over the next decade these industries have the potential to contribute an additional $1.0 billion to the State economy. The sector is therefore of critical importance at the personal, community, State and national levels.

What Do We Want To Achieve?

The South Australian Farmers Federation aims to resolve matters arising from Native Title claims in an harmonious manner. The Federation supports solving broader Aboriginal issues, noting that some of these issues are shared by all rural and remote Australians.

Current Priorities include:

  • certainty of access for Native Title claimant groups;
  • certainty of tenure for pastoralists; and
  • transparent and practical on-ground management of Aboriginal Heritage.

The Federation's Reconciliation Statement is an endorsed policy of the South Australian Farmers' Federation and an important initiative in the reconciliation process. The Statement reflects the Federation's close involvement in Native Title issues, including Indigenous Land Use Agreements, and other indigenous issues.

The Federation believes the statement will guide members when dealing with Aboriginal people and Aboriginal communities. The Federation also believes the statement will assist the wider community to understand the farming approach to Indigenous dealings.

Reconciliation: The South Australian Farmers Federation accepts the formal objectives of the Aboriginal Reconciliation Council, being: “A united Australia ; with justice and equity for all and respect for the land and Aboriginal values.” We note that reconciliation requires mutual respect and acceptance. We recognise cultures are different, but equal; and we commit to respect each other's differences and cultural beliefs while promoting equality.

The South Australian Farmers Federation: Accepts that Aboriginal people were the prior inhabitants of Australia ;

Acknowledges the culture of Aboriginal people and respects their interest in maintaining their heritage;

Recognises the inter-related problems in some communities of poor health, housing, education and employment, together with associated problems of substance abuse and high custody levels;

Recognises the joint history shared between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in the development of Australia and our style of living;

Understands the frustration of being treated as a minority and marginalised – many remote rural people feel misunderstood and disadvantaged by the large urban communities and their electoral power.
