South Australian Fishing Industry Council (SAFIC)
Who Are We?
The South Australian Fishing Industry Council (SAFIC) is responsible for providing a range of representative services to the fishing industry in South Australia. Among many other roles and responsibilities, SAFIC represents the South Australian fishing industry in Native Title claims and provides information, advice and policy statements to members, government, agencies and the public on Native Title and other matters relevant to the fishing industry.

Why Negotiate?
SAFIC believes negotiated Native Title outcomes will be more equitable for all. This process will also be quicker and more cost effective than contesting Native Title applications in court.

What Do We Want To Achieve?
SAFIC is working to achieve resolution and certainty of Native Title matters within claim areas. As part of this, SAFIC seeks a clear definition of what traditional / cultural fishing entails within each claim area, and the creation of clear management frameworks for those activities.
To ensure a long-term viable industry, it is very important that SAFIC protects the commercial rights of fishers. It must also ensure the sustainability of fish stocks and protect of the marine environment within the claim areas.
SAFIC supports the creation of opportunities for Aboriginal participation in commercial fishing, provided that entry is by the normal market mechanisms.
