Seafood Council (SA) Ltd

Who Are We?

Formed in 1998, the Seafood Council is an industry owned organisation that aims to secure industry development within an ecologically sustainable framework. The Seafood Council represents 90% of the value of the South Australian seafood industry with shareholder members drawn from all sectors and levels of the industry.

The Seafood Council recognises the right of the State's Indigenous population to exercise traditional fishing practices as well as their right to access within the commercial sector. Through the Indigenous Land Use Agreement process the Seafood Council, on behalf of industry, has been afforded the opportunity to assist in resolving Native Title issues with respect to fishing and aquaculture while working towards facilitating self-management and independence amongst indigenous groups involved in the industry.

The Seafood Council acknowledges that broad consultation with existing industry stakeholders is vital in achieving mutually acceptable outcomes regarding Native Title and access to the marine resource.

Why Negotiate?

The Seafood Council operates in an environment where the seafood industry is expected to take a greater level of responsibility for its own future but where the greatest impacts and challenges come from outside the industry. Native Title is one such external challenge for the industry.

The Seafood Council is committed to finding solutions to Native Title matters through negotiation rather than litigation. The Council believes quicker and longer lasting agreements will be made this way.

What Do We Want To Achieve?

The Council's driving objective is to protect and enhance the environment and marine resources while:

  1. Ensuring secure future access arrangements for the South Australian seafood industry;
  2. Increasing the profitability of all members of the seafood industry by improving the consumption of fish and seafood; and
  3. Supporting effective fisheries management in South Australia .

The Seafood Council views the SA Native Title Resolution Negotiations process as one that encompasses these primary objectives to ensure that Native Title matters affecting the South Australian seafood industry are progressed towards outcomes suitable to all stakeholders in line with our core values.
